Note 1) An early twentieth century
French etcher, painter and sculptor, Gustave Henri Marchetti studied art in
Paris under such instructors as Gabriel Ferrier and Bouguereau. He began to
exhibit his art there in 1895 and became a full member of the Societaire des
Artistes Francais in 1901. Marchetti exhibited with the Artistes Francais until
the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. During his career, Gustave Henri
Marchetti received awards from the Paris Salon for painting (1900) and for
engraving (1905).
From approximately 1900 to 1910, the
Paris publisher, Hautecouer, commissioned Gustave Marchetti to create a number
of French views. For most of these, the artist worked within the complex medium
of the colour aquatint. Auxerre-La Cathedrale is indicative of Marchetti's fine
work within this form of original engraving.
Note 2) The following warrants the
conclusion that the presale estimate of $300-$400 is reasonable and
justifiable. Artprice.com has no record of a Marchetti print sale. However, as
of October 19, 2012, Artprice.com was acting as an internet broker for the sale
of the following
