Note 1) Per Askart.com, Schimmel is:
"A
landscape painter and illustrator and author of animal stories, William
Schimmel created work that is especially popular in Japan. One of his books is
titled "Dear Children of the Earth." Schimmel also wrote "Water
color: The Happy Medium," which was published by
Macmillan & Co. in 1966. He has illustrated, among other books,
"Rivers Of
The Good Earth" by Martha
Groves McKelvie, published by the Franklin press, Philadelphia in 1974. With
regard to his painting, Schimmel has always returned to the Arizona deserts and
mountains for inspiration. This watercolor is an excellent example of
Schimmel's Arizona subjects, his subtle, buttery water color technique and is
of good size (23 ¼" x 26 ½")
Note 2)
Askart.com records contain no Schimmel sales. The ebay sales offers supports
the conclusion that the presale estimate of $400-$600 is reasonable and
justifiable, especially as this Schimmel watercolor up for auction is
approximately the same size as these two ebay Schimmel watercolors.

For sale here is a large and exceptional vintage signed watercolor on paper
landscape by noted American artist, William Berry Schimmel (1906-1986). Much
information is available online about this well-listed artist, but I'll give
some of the highlights here. Born in New York state, but most closely
associated with Arizona and the American west. A lifetime member of the
American Watercolor Society, he was particularly well-known for his exceptional
landscapes of western mountain ranges. This painting is quite large, and
measures roughly 20" by 28" by itself, and 34.5" by 41"
with the matte and frame and under glass. It's been stored safely under glass,
and came that way from a local Palm Springs estate, so it is in excellent
condition, with only some slight wear to the frame, and a small rip to the
paper matte
