Note 1): In addition to being a very competent Impressionist landscape painter and cartoonist, Janet Dunham Saxon was chief administrative law judge with the U.S. International Trade Commission, who retired in 1995, and opened an art gallery in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. She died in Maclean, Virginia in 2008. Only a Saxon cartoon has been offered at auction, but failed to sell. See below for the illustration and record of this auction offering. However, such cartoon was only 16 in. x 12, in. which is significantly smaller than Saxon's Philadelphia view up for auction, which is 24 in. x 20 in. and has a presale estimate of $400-$600. The cartoon had a higher presale estimate of $600-800 and did not manifest Saxon's very impressive Impressionistic style, technique or coloring present in her very esthetically appealing Philadelphia view, which is a serious work of fine art, unlike the cartoon. Moreover, unlike the auction record for the cartoon, which is silent on the following factors, the prospective bidder knows that the Saxon is in good condition and is attractively framed. The foregoing considerations warrant the conclusion that the presale estimate of $400-$600 is reasonable and justifiable.
