Note 1) Dollin was an artist residing in Brooklyn, New York
who was an art teacher in the New York City high school system. He flourished
as an artist from the 1930’s through the 1950’s. This watercolor was produced
in the 1950’s. He was a long-time member of the Art Teachers Association of the High Schools of New York City and
exhibited with the Association on numerous occasions, including its Exhibition
on February
8, 1941 through March 9, 1941 at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Helene
O'Shaughnessy, whose watercolors are Lots 1101 and 1102 in this auction,
exhibited at this Exhibition and was a good, long-time friend of Dollin.
Membership in the Association was drawn from the art teaching staffs of the
Junior and Senior academic and vocational high schools of the city. The
organization published an annual called “The Artist-Teacher,” a professional
publication. It also conducted courses in art which are visited by outstanding
men in several art fields. Dollin was an excellent art teacher, but his
greatest joy was taking up his brushes and pigments painting primarily
watercolors.
Note 2) Askart.com and Artprice.com have no
records for Dollin. The very interesting composition, beautiful coloring, bold,
original and imaginative draftsmanship, and the large size of this watercolor,
which is in excellent condition and as crisp in its coloring as the day it was
painted at least 50 years ago, justify the presale estimate of $300-$500.
