Note 1) This is a very finely
executed and esthetically appealing Impressionist painting, executed by an
artist who was exposed to classical French Impressionist painting and its
techniques at the beginning of the 20th century. The subject of this
painting and the classical Impressionistic style suggests that Stansbury
studied French Impressionism and its techniques, while in France. According to
Askart.com, it appears that Stansbury was a pupil of the California artist,
Dana Bartlett. She lived in Los Angeles, California; yet her plein air
paintings of Southern California are rare, per Edan
Hughes, "Artists in
California, 1786-1940". This opinion is confirmed by the fact that, per
Askart.com, no Stansbury painting has been offered or sold at auction. Given
the beauty and esthetic appeal of this painting; the fact that among California
and American artists the practice of classical French Impressionistic
technique, as opposed to American Impressionistic technique, is very rare; and
its being a very popular and well-painted Parisian scene, the above broad scale
presale estimates of $500 to $2,500 are reasonable and justifiable.
