The collector believes this portrait
of a rabbi to be among the finest by Kolosvary offered at auction since 1991,
the year in which Artprice.com began reporting sales results for this
artist. According to a number of online
databases, respectable prices are often achieved for portraits of rabbis,
although few are as good or as interesting as the present lot. See below for a relatively recent Koloszvary
study of a seated rabbi reading a book, which brought $3,008 (and is of a
similar size relative to the present lot).
In the present case, though, the rabbi is presented half-length, facing
the viewer, and is carrying a sumptuous torah.
