Note 1): Stannard was one of
England’s greatest 19th Century women painters of still lifes, often
set on tabletop ledges, sometimes made of marble, just like this lot. She
specialized in fruit still lifes, although she painted floral still lifes as
well, both with a highly realistic, meticulous technique manifested in this
lot. Stannard’s selection and continuing use of a pineapple in her mixed
fruit still life compositions, set her apart from most of the other 19th
Century women and male painters of fruit still lifes. For a number of
