Note 1): Stannard was one of England’s greatest 19th Century women painters of still lifes, often set on tabletop ledges, sometimes made of marble, just like this lot. She specialized in fruit still lifes, although she painted floral still lifes as well, both with a highly realistic, meticulous technique manifested in this lot. Stannard’s selection and continuing use of a pineapple in her mixed fruit still life compositions, set her apart from most of the other 19th Century women and male painters of fruit still lifes. For a number of similar Stannard fruit still life oil on canvas compositions containing pineapples and often fruits identical or similar to those presented in this lot, as well as the sale price each sold still life attained at auction from 2000 to the present, all but one of which are illustrated in Askart.com or Artprice.com are, see the following Stannard still life paintings of fruit, that include a pineapple: “Still Life Study of White and Red Grapes, Peaches, Plums, Pineapple and Melon” (36 in. x 28 in.) was sold by G.
