The following description for PANORAMIC HUNT SCENE,has been prepared entirely by the current owner, Roberts S. Fastov, Esq., and, at the collector’s request, has not been edited by Sloans & Kenyon
Note 1) James Seymour was the
greatest English painter of ''sporting paintings,” - - -that is, horses in and
of themselves, horses and jockeys/owners, race course scenes, and hunting or
coursing scenes---in the early 18th century England. This painting
is one of the largest, best and most complex and complete, panoramic hunting or
coursing paintings created by Seymour. Its provenance is impeccable, Arthur
Ackermann & Son, Inc., which was a long-time and a most important dealer in
sporting art in the early 20th century, when this painting was owned
and subsequently sold by this dealer. A review of Seymour's sales records at
auction reveals that a \ very small Seymour hunting/coursing scene, “On The
Scent,” 9.84 in. x 15.75, in. sold for $152,000 on 11/3/2010 (See below). The
Seymour painting offered at this auction is 30 in. x 49 ½ in., or approximately
3 times the size of “On The Scent, “ which also is merely a close-up view of 3
hunters on horses with a significant number of dogs, in a very simple landscape
with no stag or other prey in the painting. In contrast, the Seymour painting
being offered for sale portrays 7 men on horseback, 5 men standing, with
several dogs, amidst rolling hills with trees, all in pursuit of a stag/deer,
in a panoramic, complex landscape depicting castle ruins in mid-ground and a
river and large hill in distance. None of the Seymour hunting/coursing
paintings, which sold, came close to approaching the detail, complexity and
monumental panoramic view of this Seymour auction painting. All of Seymour's
larger paintings bring sums well in excess of $100,000. Four paintings
significantly exceeded prices of $200,000; two paintings exceeded $300,000; two
paintings exceeded $400,000, three paintings exceeded $500,000, and one
painting exceeded $800,000. Thus, any serious collector of Seymour's art or
sporting art, such as some residents of Middleburg, VA, should give serious
consideration to bidding upon and buying this magnificent and exceptional
Seymour painting and hanging it over their fireplace or in a large wall space.
The foregoing considerations and the Seymour auction sales records warrant a
conclusion that the presale estimate $250,000-$500,000 for this Seymour
painting is reasonable and justifiable, and, perhaps, the high estimate of
$500,000, is somewhat understated, which any sophisticated bidder should bear
in mind in planning his or her bidding strategy.
