The following
description for has been prepared entirely by the current owner, Roberts S.
Fastov, Esq., and, at the
collector’s request, has not been edited by Sloans & Kenyon
Note 1) This rare
monotype was executed in 1907 and is one of his very early works, that
Walkowitz executed when he returned in 1907 to the U.S., after studying at the
Academie Julian in Paris in 1906, where he was exposed to the avant-garde ideas
of the artists active in Paris. According to a Walkowitz biographer, Martica
Sawin: “Walkowitz regarded his work prior to 1920 as the most significant
period of his art.” In his doctoral thesis on Walkowitz, Dr. Theodore W.
Eversole observed: “Walkowitz laid claim to being the first to exhibit truly
Modernist paintings in the United States. After 1909, he became an intimate of
Alfred Stieglitz' 291 Gallery, and whilst there became a participant in the
debate over Modern Art in America. Walkowitz was an outspoken proponent of the
continuous experimentation in the arts, which was his definition of
Modernism….[B]y the time of the Armory Show of 1913 to which Walkowitz
contributed several paintings, his work was widely known to both fellow
Modernists as well as their opponents. Walkowitz was clearly part of the new
vocabulary of American art and criticism.” Walkowitz exhibited in the early
20th Century with many major New York City art galleries including Haas
Gallery, 291 Gallery (numerous times), Edith Halpert Downtown Gallery and
Kraushaar Galleries. See askart.com for a listing of the 42 American museums,
including virtually every major art museum, which own works by Walkowitz and
for three biographies of Walkowitz.
Note 2) The foregoing
considerations and the following Artprice.com records regarding Walkowitz sales
warrant the conclusion that the presale estimate of $1500-2500 is reasonable
and justifiable.
