Note 1): Askart.com provides the
following brief biographical sketch of Eichholtz:
"Born in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania, he trained as a coppersmith and had no formal art training.
Thomas Sully, a leading portrait painter was a major influence on his work. Between
1810 and his death in 1842, he painted more than 850 portraits as well as some
landscapes and history paintings. His specialty was strong, linear portraits of
prominent people in the Philadelphia and Baltimore area. Among his subjects
were Chief Justice John Marshall and Nicholas Biddle, president of the Bank of
the United States. He was financially successful."
Note 2) This Eichholtz portrait of a
dignified, mature mother holding on her lap a young blonde haired daughter, who
is holding a small bouquet of flowers in her right hand. The daughter's face,
while somewhat austere manifests, at least, a hint of a smile. The mother's
austere, somewhat sad face may be attributable to the fact that this portrait
was painted as memorial and memento of her daughter, who had recently passed
away. Because this portrait combines both a mother and child, who is holding a
small bouquet of flowers and is cute, it is worth more than Eichholtz's
portraits of a single, relatively austere mature women, which, per Askart.com,
bring on average between $2,000-$3,000. Thus, this Eichholtz portrait deserves
the above pre-sale estimate of $3,000-$5,000. See:
