Note 1) The following Artprice.com records regarding Anzil sales warrant the conclusion that the presale estimate of $3,000-$5,000 is reasonable and justifiable. Most of the Anzil portraits and landscapes in these auction records below are much smaller than this Anzil auction portrait and the Anzil landscape being offered in the immediately succeeding lot. If one carefully analyzes the implications of this significant size disparity, as applied to the sales prices of these previously auctioned Anzil paintings a reasonably prudent art collector is compelled to reach the conclusion that the low presale estimate for this Anzil auction portrait and landscape offerings should be set at $3,000, even though a good case could be made for increasing the low presale estimate to $3,500 or $4,000, and that the high presale estimate of $5,000 is very conservative.
Indeed, an increase in the amount of the high presale estimate of $5,000 to $6,000 or $7,000 would be reasonable and is readily justified by a careful reading and interpretation of these auction records and the implications of the size disparity factor for both such presale estimates, as it is applied to both the portrait and the landscape, as exemplars of the best of Anzil’s oeuvre c. 1950.
