FORD'S THEATER BROADSIDE FOR "OUR AMERICAN COUSIN", DATED APRIL 14, 1865. 19th century. Printed by L. Brown, Washington, DC, reputedly on April 15, 1865, to sell as a souvenir broadside posing as an original. 18" x 5". 19th century giltwood frame. Provenance: collection of Ambassador Richard Carlson, who acquired the broadside in 1997. See notations on paper backing reverse of frame. Note: Historical records indicate that a Washington, DC printer, Polkenborn, produced the original broadside for the April 14, 1865, performance of "Our American Cousin", printed prior to the knowledge of President Lincoln's same-day morning decision to attend the play, and, therefore, not bearing Lincoln's name. - 7 1/2 x 20 1/2 in.
