GEORGE WASHINGTON PARTIAL AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED,no date, circa 1785-1795. Lower half of a letter to John Page, Lieutanant Governor of Virginia from 1776 to 1779 and Congressman from 1789 to 1797, referring to "the Company", probably the Dismal Swamp Company. In frame with engraved portrait by Tardieu after a miniature by Madame de Brehan.
The fragment reads in entirety "I am sorry it is not in my power for the reason above to go go (sic) more into detail on this subject. You will be so good as to return the letter by Mr. Griffith. I do not know whether, as there appears to be such l.. [little?] warmness, & tardiness in the proceedings of the Company, it would not be a good plan to give to such a man as Luterhof, if he would undertake the draining on such terms, a certain part for reclaiming the whole. I am with much warmth, Dr. Sir, Yr Most Ob't [servant], Geo. Washington." With addressee, "John Page Esqre", lower left.
Washington owned interest in the Dismal Swamp Company from 1763 to 1795. Estimate $5,000-6,000
fold creases; losses to left edge and probably clipped at right edge; repaired tears in lower left and lower right quadrants.
