PROVENANCE: Recognized during his lifetime in Brook''s Palmer''s, A Treasury of American Clocks, Elmer O. Stennes (1911-1975) remains one of America''s most infamous and enigmatic clockmakers. Convicted of the 1968 murder of second wife, Eva Stennes, Elmer''s business of reproducing early American girandoles, banjo clocks, and tall case clocks continued uninterrupted. This Pillar and Scroll Style Clock, popular during the 1825 period, was produced in 1972 and coincides with Elmer''s release from prison that same year.
In opening the clock, we found the a paper label bearing the name "Elmer O. Stennes," while the eglomise panel is signed illegibly and dated 1972.
