CONGOLESE PENDE GIWOYO MASK. Pende Giwoyo mask, traditionally used by the Pende people of the Democratic Republic of Congo during initiation and funeral ceremonies. These masks, also known as Kiwoyo among the Eastern Pende, are believed to represent the spirit of the dead. The mask is typically worn tilted on the forehead, giving the appearance of a cadaver in a coffin during a wake. It often features a greenish face with a raffia-lined chin strap and may be adorned with other materials like wood and plant fiber. - Height: 14 inches (including raffia).
