MATATE ANCIENT SOUTHWEST INDIAN STONE FOR GRINDING CORN, PRE-COLUMBIAN. Based on the label it was foound in Chacho Canyon, NM, app. 12 miles from Pueblo Bonito in 1929. Matate is a type of grinding stone used by ancient Southwest Indian cultures. Matates are flat or slightly concave stones used in conjunction with a mano (a smaller, hand-held grinding stone) to process various materials, primarily grains like corn, into flour. These tools were essential for food preparation in many ancient cultures, including those in the American Southwest, where they played a vital role in daily life and sustenance. - App. 20 in. x 10 3/4 in.
