NIGERIAN BENIN EDO LARGE BRONZE RAM AQUAMANILE. Patinated lost-wax cast in bronze or brass of a aquamanile in the form of standing ram. The ram is depicted with upright ears, curving horns, striated fur on chest and split hooves; nostrils pierced. Twisted rope depicted between horns. Rams are regarded as symbols of masculinity in Benin and were sacrificial animals at the annual Ague ceremony. Ram aquamanile were used by the Oba (King) to wash his hands during the closing rites of the Ague ceremony in the royal palace in Benin City. - Height: 17.5 inches. Length: 17.5 inches.
