Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Framed. The painting depicts the death of Prince Józef Poniatowski during the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. Poniatowski, a Polish general serving in Napoleon's army, is shown on horseback, leading a charge across the Elster River. He is surrounded by other soldiers, some of whom are falling in battle. In the foreground, a fallen soldier lies face down, presumably dead. The background shows a chaotic scene of battle, with smoke and fire visible in the distance. The painting captures the drama and tragedy of war, and the death of a heroic figure.
