Patinated wooden mask used at the conclusion of the mukanda, an annual initiation ceremony for boys aged eight to twelve among the Luvale, Chokwe, Luchazi, and Mbunda peoples of Zambia. The mask itself represents a spirit, often a deceased ancestor, who returns to the world of the living to assist the boys during the initiation process. -
