NOTE:
Linen emigrated to America in 1834 and worked mainly in New York City and New Jersey. He established himself as the leading painter of cabinet portraits (oil paintings larger than miniature and smaller than life) during the 1830's. Linen painted in Richmond and Baltimore in the 1850's. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1837 to 1852, and also The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
