J. Eugene Gardner worked in New York City, where he was represented by Newcomb-Macklin Galleries, as well as on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia. According to revered American artist Everett Shinn (1876-1953), 'Eugene Gardner brings an ever present freshness with nothing of that indecision which comes in experimental plucking on the harp and strings of another artist's color. His skies, the aerial vaulted dome of poet's domain, and Gardiner is a poet, dominate the flat earthiness of his Maryland scenes, where clouds incite a rebellious contrast to the vast clarity of unending space.' Lots 1638-1646 descended in the family of the artist to his niece, the current owner.
