PROVENANCE: Estate of Betty Lou and Ambassador Arthur W. Hummel, Jr., Chevy Chase, MD. Arthur Hummel was captured by the Japanese after the Attack on Pearl Harbor; he escaped in 1944 and fought beside Chinese nationalist guerillas before entering the Foreign Service. He was the ambassador to Ethiopia, Burma, Pakistan and China and served as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs during the Carter administration. Born in China to Christian missionaries, Hummel's family moved to the United States in 1927; shortly thereafter, his father, a noted Sinologist, was appointed the first Chief of Orientalia at the Library of Congress. .
NOTE: Both pieces were dedicated to Arthur W. Hummel, Jr., former US Ambassador to China. The calligrapher, Huang Zhen, was the first PRC Ambassador to France and Director of China's Liaison Office in US from 1973 to 1977.
