PLAINS INDIAN HORN RATTLE, 19th-20th century, possibly Lakota, Sioux. Horn rattle cut from center portion of horn to make a symmetrical circular rattle shape. Horse hair extends from top of horn, affixed by a red band. Ends of rattle decorated with red and blue curvy lines with red circular dots bordering circular circumference of the rattle. Horn affixed to wooden handle with very tightly wound wide leather sinews and brass tacks affixed by red banding material to the handle; also large red, black and white bead/decorative objects, affixed by leather sinew. The middle third of the handle is wrapped with even and tightly spaced circles alternating red, white and blue seed beads, at the end of which are affixed the same kind of large red, black and white bead/decorative objects attached by leather sinew and brass tacks. Bottom third is wrapped with wide leather sinews affixed by brass tacks. Shock of horsehair, affixed with red binding material, is appended to bottom of handle - 29 in. x 4 in.
