PLAINS INDIAN BRASS TOMAHAWK, 19th-20th century, possibly Lakota, Sioux. With heart cutout in brass blade and blade fitted tightly to the wooden handle, with some plain engraving on and near the circular piece of the blade that is fitted to the handle. Immediately below the place where the blade is joined to the handle, four horizontal rows of decorative brass tacks, each encircling the handle. Immediately below are two pieces of horsehair affixed to the handle with sinew and a red band with beads and a shock of animal fur. Below are two rows of decorative brass tacks each encircling and twisting around the handle on a curved, upraised bias At bottom of handle is what appears to be one large oval cream colored bead with a dark blue or black circle around the middle of the bead, affixed by leather sinews - 23 1/4 in. long.
