PLAINS INDIAN HORN RATTLE, 19th-20th century, possibly Lakota, Sioux. On the large end of the horn is a circular leather cover affixed to the horn by running crisscrossing leather straps through circular holes made on the edge of the horn. Such circular leather cover is painted in parfleche style with a decorative subject, painted in red, green and black in center of a circle, surrounded by a turquoise blue field and a narrow outer circular border painted in white with painted black outlining of circle and painted red narrow lines dividing the white circle into small triangular sections. The small end of the horn has a small, narrow animal horn (deer (?)) extending horizontally from the large horn, which is affixed by a leather cover and strap. The large horn is fitted tightly to the wood handle and is further affixed by crisscrossing leather sinews and wrapping at the top of the handle, with a brass tack affixing the wrapping to the handle. A brass tack holding the sinew in place. This decoration is followed with red, white and blue seed beads in asymetrical bands encircling the wood handle, with a black bead cross in the middle of the broad white circular band. Immediately below the bead decoration is a small, decorative leather wrapping affixed with a brass tack. - 23 1/2 in. long.
