ATTRIBUTED TO ALIGI SASSU (Italy, 1912-2000). PRANCING HORSE, oil on wood panel - Framed, 21 1/2 in. x 24 in. Estimate $5,000-10,000
This painting depicts Sassu's most favored subject matter, a prancing or galloping horse, and reflects all the vim, vitality and dynamism of many of the horses depicted in the previous Sassu painting, the above Sassu auction records, as well as those on the Google "Images" subsite for Sassu's works of art. In the lower right, the painting is dated "(19)63" and accompanied by two words. The bottom word is very stylized version of what appears to be the artist's last name "Sassu," while the word immediately above it may be an inscribed title, but it is definitely not the artist's first name "Aligi." To the best of our knowledge, Sassu never signed his works with his full name. It is very difficult to read these inscriptions on this work of art.
