William Joseph Patterson was born in Albany New York. He studied at the Hartford Art School and Syracuse University and later became a part of the faculty at Hartford. He also studied for several years at the American Academy in Rome. His work has been shown at numerous solo and group exhibitions, and resides in numerous public and private collections. For many years, Patterson taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He currently lives in Texas.
