PROVENANCE: The painting is a portrait of Ann Elizabeth Diffenderfer (1818-1858), daughter of Richard and Ann Charlotte Miller. She married Aflred Friend who was an oyster and fruit merchant in Baltimore, MD. They had fourteen children, ten of whom lived to adulthood. One son, Charles Harry Friend married Florence Morse Keener who was a descendant of the Morse family that invented the first dental chair in Baltimore, MD and related to Samuel B. Morse. Another son, Walter Augustus Friend married Elizabeth Mitchell Daley and are the grandparents of the current owner.
