PROVENANCE: By direct family descent. Frank Edward Johnson was a well known explorer, artist, lecturer and photographer. He was married from 1915 to 1925 to Jessie Harlan Lincoln (1875 - 1948) the grand-daughter of President Abraham Lincoln. (Jessie was the daughter of Robert Todd Lincoln, President Lincoln's only child who survived into adulthood.). Johnson studied in Paris at the famous Academie Julian and exhibited at the Paris Salon in the 1890's. He also exhibited with the Washington ( DC ) Water Color Club in 1917 and 1918. Johnson wrote for many years for National Geographic magazine about his world travels. He specialized in North African subjects. Johnson died in Cuba in 1934 at age 61 while on an expedition.
