Edgar Scudder Hamilton was born in San Antonio, Texas on July 31, 1869. Showing great artistic ability, he headed to the Art Students' League in New York City in 1889. In 1892, he enrolled at the Julian Art School, later placing fourth in the prestigious Paris Prize competition. In later years, he supplemented his artistic pursuits by working at various New York advertising agencies. He constantly suffered with acute attacks of respiratory illness. In 1901, he married Josephine Biggs, the sister of a prominent Stamford, Connecticut physician. Shortly thereafter, he opened a portrait studio in New York, enjoying modest success. He died of tuberculosis on June 3, 1903 near Liberty, New York.
