AFTER GIULIO ROMANO (Italian, 16th century). L'adoration des bergers, Etching and engraving after an oil painting by Giulio Romano. Print made by: Louis Desplaces in the early 18th century. Adoration of the Shepherds: at centre, the Virgin kneels before the infant Christ, surrounded by a seated cow and mule and shepherds; at left the standing figure of St Longinus, holding his lance and a reliquary; at right, St John the Evangelist stands holding a goblet containing a snake and a book in his robes. Lettered at lower centre: 'L'ADORATION DES BERGERS / D'apres le Tableau de Jules Romain, qui est dans le Cabinet du Roy / haut de 3 pieds 4 pouces, large de 6 pieds 7 pouces, peint sur bois, gravé par Louis Desplaces'. Framed. Not examined out of frame. - Sight: 14 x 12 inches; frame: 24.4 x 19.5 inches
