Impressionist painting entitled on verso: 'View in City Park, New Orleans, Louisiana November 1916,' partially signed on verso and inscribed with foregoing title and dedicated 'To Mr. and Mrs. Allen A. Jones.' Oil on artist's board. This is a much earlier painting than Lot 1453, also painted by Woodward. The artist's partial signature which appears immediately below the above title is clearly introduced with the words 'Painted by' and most of the gray writing surface, upon which the artist's signature had been written has been abraded or torn away in spots, so that most of the signature is missing. However, it is still possible to discern the first 2 letters of the artist's first name, which appear to be 'El' and the last 4 letters of the last name appear to be 'ward,' which is consistent with the artist's full name of 'Ellsworth Woodward.'
Provenance: A very elderly Washington, D.C. collector, who acquired this painting from Woodward, and the following Woodward painting lot, when she was very young and a resident of New Orleans many years ago.
Surface dirt and debris with areas of uneven varnish. Pinholes in each corner.
UV: Scattered small areas of inpainting upper right corner. One inch horizontal line over signature.
