Estimate $10,000-15,000

Framed in gold frame.

This is a handsome, well-painted portrait of a beautiful English woman of quality, which was clearly painted by Beechey. Beechey's style and technique is demonstrated by his strong penchant, not manifested by other of his contemporary portraitists, for depicting a young woman's hair with an almost unruly wildness in its profusion, but, in many cases, controlled and arranged by the subject of the portrait, which often has masses of curls, twirls and squiggly hair on a woman's temple and forehead. Beechey often portrays a young woman's face with a softly rendered, almost chalky, white skin with thin, reddish/ pink glazing to indicate her cheeks. Both of these characteristics are clearly manifested in this lovely Portrait of Lady Elizabeth Cole.
