Baltimore native Edward 'Eddie' Rosenfeld began his artistic career as a housepainter at age 16, quickly advancing to sign painter and billboard painter for the Standard Oil Company. The Company sent him to the Maryland Institute, College of Art at night.
to refine and further his inborn talents. Finding himself unemployed in 1930 at the onset of the Depression, Rosenfeld turned to painting to fill his days. As a WPA artist, he produced 13 paintings for public buildings, including eight in Washington, DC. Rosenfeld became involved in other federally funded art projects, notably serving on the exhibition selection committee for 'The Army at War', an exhibition of artwork by World War II combat artists in 1944 and 'The War Against Japan' in 1945. He collaborated with art commentator Forbes Watson, painter/sculptor Dorothea Greenbaum, and Mrs. Henry Morgenthau to stage the internationally acclaimed exhibition that traveled to 28 cities.
Rosenfeld's work has been described as 'Alive with gutsy realism…a certain poetic quality …turbulent and explicit brushwork' (New York Times); '…sturdily poetic in feeling' (Herald Tribune). The New York Sun observed that: 'a street in Baltimore, the beach in Menemaha, fishing boats, an old fire engine, a jeep, a country a kitchen, and the circus. All these are part of his intimate life and he records them with infinite tenderness.'
Eddie Rosenfeld's work is included in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Phillips Colleciton, Smithsonian American Art Museum.
