Sale 66 Lot 177

CHINESE ARMORIAL FAMILLE VERTE PORCELAIN CHARGER. Kangxi Period, circa 1705. The center painted with the Arms of France within a large border depicting twelve lotus petals enclosing alternating decoration of figures and flower-filled vases.

NOTE: For a similar charger see Michel Beurdeley "Chinese Trade Porcelain", ill. p. 156, cat.29. "The Armorial bearing of the famille verte period generally takes up the whole of the center of the dish, while the border remains purely Chinese. A plate in the Musée de Mariemont in Belgium is typical of the production of this period....The Arms of France in the center have a streamer with the inscription "Frank Ryk", from which we conclude that this piece was imported into France by Dutch, not French, commercial enterprise.
Export wares such as this do not have the nien bao, or reign mark, of Kangxi, who in any case forbade its use after 1677. Nor they have the double circle in underglaze blue, which was usual at that time."
