Originally in the home of George Washington Doane, the second Episcopal Bishop of New Jersey, in Burlington, NJ. His home Riverside was located on the bank of the Delaware River. The chairs were inherited by his son, William Croswell Doane, the first Episcopal Bishop of Albany, NY.

The dining chairs were later in the historic Murdock House on New Lebanon, New York, built by the Revolutionary War Colonel Jonathan Murdock in 1800. They passed onto a home on the Potamac River in Heathsville, VA , to North Carolina and then to a home in Washington, DC.
