CONGOLESE SONGYE PEOPLE FLY WHISKS.. Set of two fly whisks of the Songye people, an ethnic group primarily found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Fly whisks in African cultures, including the Songye, often served as ritual emblems of power and protection, carried by chiefs or diviners. They can also be considered items of courtly regalia. Songye fly whisks are typically characterized by a carved wooden handle, often in the form of a human or animal figure, attached to a whisk made of materials like horsehair or raffia. The figures can incorporate symbolic elements like cowrie shells for wealth or zoomorphic heads for spiritual strength. - Height: 17 inches.
