ARTIST PROFILE: Benson Bond Moore (1882–1974) was a Native American painter and highly skilled conservator, most recognized for his detailed landscapes and animal portraits. Raised in an artistic household in Washington, D.C., he acquired the foundations of framing and restoration from his father before pursuing formal training at the Corcoran School of Art and the Linthicum Institute. While his personal work was prolific, Moore achieved significant acclaim for his work in art restoration, eventually taking over his father’s legacy of maintaining White House paintings and notably restoring Robert Weir’s The Embarkation of the Pilgrims in the United States Capitol rotunda. His artistic contributions are preserved in prestigious institutions globally, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Library of Congress, and the National Library of New Zealand.
