ARTIST PROFILE: Jean-Marie Haessle (1939–2024) was a prolific French-American painter whose work bridged the gap between American Modernism and Color Field composition. Born in a small French village and initially working in salt mines, Haessle discovered his passion for art while bedridden with illness, eventually moving to Paris in 1962 and later to New York in 1967 with only $200. As an "urban pioneer" in New York, he was one of the original residents of the Westbeth artist community before settling in SoHo, where he befriended icons like Basquiat and Donald Judd. Throughout his long career, his style evolved from figurative experimentation to the vibrant, geometrical abstraction for which he is now internationally recognized. Haessle’s legacy is defined by his synthesis of European Impressionist roots and the bold scale of the New York art scene, with his works exhibited in major galleries from Paris and Mexico City to Seoul and Tokyo.
