ARTIST PROFILE: Ethel Easton Paxson (1885–1982) was an accomplished American Impressionist painter and educator, primarily known for her landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Born in Meriden, Connecticut, Paxson received a rigorous artistic education, studying at the Corcoran School of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under renowned mentors such as Cecilia Beaux, Thomas Anschutz, and William Merritt Chase. Her style was significantly influenced by Chase, with whom she studied at the Shinnecock Hills Summer School. A traveler as well as an artist, Paxson lived in Brazil for four years (1916–1920), an experience that broadened her subject matter to include vibrant South American scenes. Upon returning to the United States, she became a prominent figure in the Connecticut art community and a dedicated teacher, holding positions at the National Academy of Design and the Frick Museum. Her works are today included in major permanent collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Florence Griswold Museum.
