ARTIST PROFILE: Alain Carrier (1924–2020) was a prolific French poster artist and illustrator whose career was shaped by early involvement in the French Resistance and chance encounters with cultural luminaries like André Malraux and Paul Éluard at his parents' café in Sarlat. After honing his craft as an assistant to the legendary Paul Colin and studying at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière, Carrier rose to prominence by designing iconic posters and vinyl covers for stars such as Édith Piaf, Josephine Baker, and Bourvil. His professional trajectory included serving as the artistic director for Au Printemps and later as a communication director at Havas, while his 1970 "long-necked duck" poster for Delpeyrat earned him the prestigious Grand Prix Martini gold medal. Beyond commercial success, Carrier was renowned for his powerful humanitarian work—most notably his 1980 Amnesty International campaign featuring the Victor Hugo quote, "One does not gag the light"—and his lasting contributions to the arts were recognized with his induction into the Grand Larousse encyclopédique and the preservation of his extensive archive in his beloved Dordogne region.
