"The Storming of Ft Wagner" Lithograph Poster 20th century Lithographic poster after the one first published by the Chicago firm Kurz & Allison in 1890; it is a vivid dramatization of the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, which took place on July 18, 1863, during the American Civil War. The scene captures the charge of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first all-Black regiment recruited in the North, as they attempted to seize the Confederate stronghold protecting Charleston Harbor. At the center of the chaotic hand-to-hand combat, the regiment's commander, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, is depicted leading his men onto the parapet just before his death. The valor displayed by the 54th Massachusetts became a turning point in the war, proving the courage of Black soldiers and directly inspiring the recruitment of over 180,000 African Americans into the Union Army. Framed. Not examined out of frame. DIMENSIONS: Sight (as matted): 18 x 23 inches; Frame: 24 x 30 inches
