ARTIST PROFILE: Albert Isidore Devos (De Vos) (1868–1950) (also recorded as De Vos) was a Belgian artist born in Oostakker in 1868 and who died in Ghent in 1950, trained at the Academy in Ghent, and the brother of the tone poet Isidore De Vos. He specialized in seascapes and the life of North Sea fishermen, and loved the sea and fishing life, often going out on night fishing trips for firsthand inspiration. A contemporary critic described his range, noting that he understood both the fury of a rough, foaming sea glowing with coppery, vitriol-like colors, and the gentler "poetic sea" wrapped in the hazy morning or evening light, calling his marines mood pieces with the beating heart of a Flemish romantic. His wife, Judith De Bruycker, was also a painter. He remained active in Ghent throughout his career.
