ARTIST PROFILE: Howard Behrens (American, 1933–2014) was a Chicago-born, Washington D.C.-raised painter celebrated as one of the premier palette-knife artists of his generation. He earned a master's degree in painting and sculpture from the University of Maryland, College Park, and worked for years at the U.S. Government Printing Office before turning to painting full time. Known for his vibrant, impasto style capturing coastal landscapes, architecture, and scenes from his extensive travels through Italy and beyond, Behrens embraced an expressionistic sensibility rooted in the spontaneity of Impressionism, and he was later named an official artist of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, with his work held in numerous private and museum collections.
