GERMANIAE ALIORUMQUE QUORUNDAM LOCORUM EUROPAE POLIOMETRIA" — ANTIQUE DISTANCE CHART BY TOBIAS CONRAD LOTTERcirca 1750 Elaborately hand-colored 18th-century distance chart (poliometria) by the noted Augsburg cartographer Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717–1777), titled "Germaniae Aliorumque Quorundam Locorum Europae Poliometria." Rather than depicting geography in map form, this striking diagonal grid chart tabulates travel distances between major German and European cities and towns, framed at the top by an ornate engraved cartouche with a pastoral and allegorical scene explaining the chart's use ("Richtige Anzeige, wie weit die Haupt-Orte in Deutschland und andere beruhmte Stadte in Europa von einander entlegen"). The distance figures are organized in a colorful diagonal grid of green, pink, and yellow columns cross-referencing hundreds of city names down the left margin and along the bottom. Framed. Not examined out of frame. Plate Size: 47.0 x 55.8 cm (18.5 x 22.0 inches) $250-350
