ZAMBIAN LUVALE MAKISHI MASQUERADE MUKANDA MASK. Makishi mask, which is a significant part of the Makishi masquerade tradition in Zambia, particularly among the Luvale, Chokwe, Luchazi, and Mbunda peoples. The Makishi masquerade is performed at the conclusion of the mukanda, an annual initiation ceremony for boys aged eight to twelve, marking their transition into adulthood. The masks represent ancestral spirits and play a crucial role in these coming-of-age rites, appearing and dancing in the village square. - Height: 16 inches.
