Created around 1760, "The Pad" is a significant early work by the English animal painter and Royal Academician Sawrey Gilpin (1733–1807), produced shortly after his move to London. The piece depicts a "pad"—a horse known for its steady, comfortable gait—and serves as a refined example of Gilpin’s specialized interest in equine portraiture.
