MALIAN DOGON EQUESTRIAN FIGURE. Patinated Dogon equestrian wooden figure traditionally crafted by the Dogon people of Mali. These figures typically depict a rider on horseback and hold cultural and historical significance. Dogon equestrian figures are often interpreted as representations of prestige, power, and the connection to ancestors or leaders. Horses were historically scarce in Dogon country, making them symbols of wealth and status. These sculptures are believed to commemorate heroes, deceased leaders, or hogons (priests and political chiefs). The presence of libations on some sculptures suggests their use in rituals aimed at attaining social distinction.
