NIGERIAN BENIN EDO CONTAINER EKPETIN DEPICTING A MUDFISH. Possibly 16th century. Patinated lidded container, made of brass or bronze, is not just a vessel but is a powerful symbols of the Oba's (king's) authority and the spiritual beliefs of the Edo people. These containers, known as ekpetin in the Edo language, were likely used for royal or ceremonial purposes. They may have held offerings for shrines, particularly those dedicated to Olokun, or precious medicines and gifts. The craftsmanship of these objects, using the complex lost-wax casting method, further demonstrates their importance and association with the royal court and the Oba's bronze-casting guild. Lastly, the mudfish is a recurring and highly important motif in Benin art, and its presence on a container speaks to its royal and ritualistic context.
