SIGNED AGNES PEYNETSA LARGE NATIVE AMERICAN ZUNI PUEBLO POLYCHROME ARTIST SIGNED POTTERY, A LARGE JAR / OLLA. Signed AGNES PEYNETSA Large Native American Zuni Pueblo Polychrome Artist signed pottery, a large jar / olla. Artist signed (with the monogram "AP") Zuni Pueblo polychrome symmetrical jar shape is known as an olla featuring designs of a deer (or Awitelin in Zuni) with a "heartline"-a painted line from the mouth/heart area to the body, symbolizing the breath or "life force" of the animal. This is a common and iconic motif in Zuni and other Pueblo pottery. The use of distinct black, red-brown, and white colors with repeating geometric and curvilinear motifs is typical of Zuni's traditional revival styles.

ARTIST PROFILE: The bowl is likely by AGNES PEYNETSA (born 1962), Zuni Pueblo, active ca. 1984-present; she makes polychrome on whiteware jars, cornmeal bowls, effigy frog and lizard pots, frog figures, seed pots, canteens, miniatures, and jewelry. Agnes Peynetsa is the daughter of Charles and Wilma Peynetsa, wife of Berdel Soseech; sister of Priscilla Peynetsa and Anderson Peynetsa. Agnes learned pottery making from Jennie Laate and her brother and sister. Agnes sometimes collaborates with Berdel Soseeah her husband. Agnes prefers white clay.
